ABOUT LISA TSE, HELEN TSE AND JANET TSE

In 2004 Lisa, Helen and Janet Tse, founded Sweet Mandarin, and built it into one of the UK’s most recognised brands with an award winning restaurant and bestselling book, Sweet Mandarin (Random House). Giving up highly professional jobs, Helen a lawyer, Lisa a financier and Janet an engineer, they staked everything on a dream – and made Sweet Mandarin one of the main players in the restaurant business and literary world.

Being the third generation of women restaurateurs, their family story is a fascinating and inspirational tale of the ups and downs of following your dream. From the first conversation when the seed of the idea was planted, to getting financing, finding a name and opening the first store, it a personal story about three 20 something sisters who stopped ‘thinking about it’ and ‘did it’.

Their book, Sweet Mandarin written by Helen Tse has been shortlisted for the Portico Prize 2008 and the Barnes and Noble Prize 2009. It is also used in schools in the UK, USA, Caribbean and China for English and World literature. Not only is a moving story which touched the heart of Amy Tan (bestselling author of Joy Luck Club) and Oprah’s chef (Art Smith), but it also tackles some of the fears and answers some of the elusive questions about what it really takes to become an entrepreneur.

Lisa, Helen and Janet Tse have been named one of the 100 Entrepreneurs by EN Magazine and Lisa Tse has won the Prowess Businesswoman of the Year Award 2008 and NWDA Outstanding Individual of the Year Award 2005 for single handedly revolutionising Home Economic classes teaching the schools how to cook chinese dim sum. Their story has been the cover story of Shanghai Daily and featured in the Daily Mail, the Guardian, the Sunday Times, the Wall Street Journal, Newsnight with Jeremy Paxman, BBC News Worldwide, BBC Radio, American TV, Olive Magazine amongst many others and their lives documented in a BBC One and ITV documentary.
